How to Actually Have a Minneapolis Date Night (Without Falling Asleep at the Table)

I love my kids. I love my husband. But sometimes, I want to sit in a dimly lit restaurant, sip a mocktail, and pretend I am closer to Gen Z than I actually am.

That’s why date nights exist. They’re not just about romance—they’re about remembering who you were before life took that hairpin turn into parenthood. We love it, but it’s a lot.

Truth is. Date nights are exhausting. First, there’s the childcare Olympics. Then, the pressure to pick a place that feels “special” but not so special that it requires reservations booked three months in advance. (Owamni, I’m still trying to get a table…) And more often than not, by 9 p.m., both of you are trying to act like you’re having fun, but deep down, you’re fantasizing about your bed (for sleep, obviously).

So, how do you make a date night actually worth it? I’m going to share my experience as a millennial mom of twins living in Minneapolis St. Paul. I happen to be pretty good at making date nights happen at least twice a month.

Choose Your Energy (So You Don’t End Up at a Buffet You Secretly Hate)

Before you even open Google Maps, ask yourself: What’s the mood tonight? What’s my energy level?

Because here’s what you don’t want—accidentally ending up somewhere that doesn’t match the energy. Energy matters because there’s so little energy to spare when you have kids, especially young ones. Though, I’m told the preteen and teen years are also taxing, so I guess we’re in for perma-tired.

Some angles I like to think about before I’m planning a date night:

  • Energetic – You want music, movement, something that makes you feel lively.
  • Cozy – Low lights, warm drinks, soft couches, a place where you can stare at your partner and be like, “Hey, I remember why I like you.”
  • Casual – No pressure, no tight pants, just an easy night where you don’t have to perform.
  • Outdoorsy – A little fresh air, a little adventure, but nothing that requires hiking boots or stretching.
  • Luxurious – You want to feel like a fine dining person and have someone else deal with dishes.
  • Surprising – Fun, interactive, the opposite of sitting silently across from each other, scrolling your phones.

Once you lock in the vibe**,** picking a spot gets way easier.

The Childcare Struggle

If you have kids, you know the hardest part of date night isn’t where to go—it’s getting out the door.

First, the emotional: Will they cry? Will they think I’m abandoning them?

I have made major strides in this area. I knew from having sisters with kids that if you don’t get babysitters and childcare options started early, it’s really tough to do later, when the kids aren’t used to it. So from the age of 9 months we were integrating outings like dates and afternoons away.

Then, the financial side: Nice. The cost of dinner plus a babysitter is the price of a flight to Colorado.

This part is tough. My latest hack for saving money is finding a younger babysitter that is still experienced.

And finally, the physical challenge: peeling a toddler off your leg while assuring them you will, in fact, return.

Pick Your Date Night (A.K.A. Avoid Spiraling Your Way Through Netflix)

Instead of just listing off restaurants like every other “date night ideas” blog, I’m giving you a strategy. This way, you feel like a person who goes on dates and explores creative date ideas instead of a person who eats Chipotle in their car because they couldn’t pick a restaurant. (No shade on eating in your car though. I do it often.)

The “Fun Date Idea” Date

〰️ Voxel Virtual Reality Parlor in St. Paul is Minnesota’s first virtual reality arcade. That will make your partner think “wow, you’re fun!”

〰️ Virtual Reality Bar in St. Louis Park Note, REM5 is closed now! This was such a fun place for a date, but it’s no longer open.

〰️ You could think about visiting an amusement park like Nickelodeon Universe as an adult. I’d recommend going during the day though, it gets primal on weekends…

〰️ Slick City the newish slide park in Maple Grove offers adult only hours too.

The “Foodie Date Ideas” Date

〰️ Food Halls – If one of you is a buffet person (aka my husband) and the other is deeply anti-buffet (aka me), food halls are the answer. You get variety without the weird sneeze guards. Minneapolis has a couple, and they always have something new. No reservations, no drama, just options.

For those “I Want to Eat Everything” dates—because committing to just one cuisine is a level of decisiveness we don’t always have—the Twin Cities deliver. Food halls are the move: all the variety, none of the sad sneeze guards. Many of these food halls also feature an extensive drink menu. Here’s where to go:

The Market at Malcolm Yards

Prospect Park, Minneapolis
Think industrial-chic meets global flavor parade. Whether you’re craving ramen, tacos, or something plant-based that still slaps, it’s all here. Bonus points for the self-serve beer wall, which removes the existential crisis of choosing a single drink.

Eat Street Crossing

Whittier, Minneapolis
New kid on the block (opened in 2023), but already a heavy hitter. Pizza, ice cream, sushi, ramen, boba—this place understands the assignment. There’s also a full bar and an event space if you feel like turning your snack quest into an occasion.

Graze Food Hall by Travail

North Loop, Minneapolis
This one’s fancy. Seven different food concepts, five James Beard-nominated chefs, and a rooftop patio to remind you that you deserve nice things. If you like variety with a side of culinary flex, this is your spot.

Midtown Global Market

South Minneapolis
A whole world of flavors under one roof. Tacos? Got ’em. Curry? Yep. Pho? Of course. It’s vibrant, it’s casual, and there are often free cultural events—so you can pretend you left the country for the night.

Hmongtown Marketplace

St. Paul
A hidden gem where you can feast on Hmong sausage, papaya salad, and steaming bowls of pho for the price of your last overpriced latte. Affordable, authentic, and exactly the kind of place that turns food into a mini adventure.

Food halls are a good way to feel like you’re doing something creative but require minimal commitment. You get maximum options so you can go your own way (when your husband or partner wants something weird) and no risk of one person suffering through a meal they secretly hate. Plus, no reservations required. Go ahead, hit a food hall.

The “Cooking Class” Date Night

If you’re looking for a date idea that’s both fun and can add value to the never-ending task of cooking for your family, a cooking class might just be your dream date. Minneapolis offers such a packed lineup of cooking classes that thankfully cater to all skill levels, from “I burn toast” to “I could totally win Chopped.”

Because truly, what’s better than learning a new skill, eating delicious food, AND having someone else clean up the kitchen? It’s giving… Emily in Paris but with less drama and more carbs.

Here’s where to get your culinary romance on:

〰️ Cooks of Crocus Hill | Bellecour North Loop, Minneapolis Learn from actual chefs who know what they’re doing! Their classes cover everything from pasta making to French pastries. The best part? You get to eat what you make, and there’s usually wine involved. Talk about making dinner prep sexy for once.

〰️ Way Cool Cooking School Eden Prairie I’m dying to try this place! They offer hands-on classes for couples where you can learn to roll sushi, make fresh pasta, or create restaurant-worthy desserts. The vibe is casual and fun—no one’s going to judge if you can’t properly julienne a carrot.

〰️ Cozymeal Various locations around the Twin Cities This is perfect if you want a more intimate experience. They connect you with local professional chefs who can customize classes just for you two. You can even book private sessions if you don’t want strangers witnessing your questionable knife skills.

〰️ Alliance Fraincaise Minneapolis Let’s face it France kind of has the vibe when it comes to cooking. Learn French cooking at THE French place in Minneapolis.

〰️ Classpop! Minneapolis These pop-up style classes are super laid-back and perfect for when you want to learn something specific without committing to a whole series. Think of it as the culinary version of a one-night stand, but with food.

〰️ Community Education Classes All over the place, seriously Don’t sleep on these hidden gems! Community education programs often have amazing cooking classes taught by local food enthusiasts at a fraction of the cost. Check out Minneapolis Public Schools, Saint Paul Public Schools, and suburban district programs for options.

Pro tip: Book these classes WAY in advance for special occasions. Nothing says “I planned ahead” like securing a spot in a Valentine’s Day chocolate-making class three months early. And let’s be honest—planning ahead is basically foreplay when you’re a parent.

Whether you end up making perfect gnocchi or hilariously failing at souffle, you’ll have stories to tell and maybe even some new recipes to add to your weeknight rotation. Plus, there’s something weirdly attractive about watching your partner concentrate on not cutting their finger off while chopping onions.

The “Make It Feel Like a Whole Night Out” Date

〰️ Book Club → Colita – The trick with date night is staying out long enough to justify the babysitter, but not so long that you fall asleep mid-conversation.

My move? Start with a little cocktail and snack at Book Club, then head across the street to Colita for the main event. Two spots, one night, and you feel like an actual person who goes places. It’s thrilling. For an added touch of romance, consider ending your night at a rooftop bar, where you can enjoy stunning views of the city while sipping on your favorite drinks.

〰️ Lagos Tacos → Moto i – I loved doing this date night. Start with chips and salsa and a margarita at Lagos Tacos. Then head to Moto i for a rooftop moment. Anything on Lyn-Lake can give that two for one date night experience.

The “Rooftop” Date Night

Speaking of rooftops, I love them. Nobody loves a rooftop dining experience more than a Midwesterner. There’s something really magical about it being warm enough to be outside, on a roof no less, with a beverage and great food. Some of my favorite rooftops:
〰️ Pinoli (formerly Amore Victoria)
〰️ Moto-i
〰️ Union Rooftop
〰️ Pinoli
〰️ Lyn-Lake Brewery
〰️ Daisys Uptown (this location changes a lot, so double-check)
〰️ Hewing Hotel Rooftop *I’ve never been but I’m nagging my husband currently
〰️ Four Seasons Hotel Rooftop
〰️ RH Rooftop in Edina
〰️ Bear Cave Brewing in Hopkins

The “Creative Date Idea”

One day, I was looking at my to-do list in Asana because I’ve learned to maniacally plan my life using project management tools. I realized the only way a date was going to happen is if we combined some mundane tasks with a date. So…oil change.

I asked my husband if he wanted to come with my to Valvoline. (Hot right?) So we got the oil change, and spent a good 15 – 20 minutes chatting in the car, reconnecting. It was nice. Then we got some food and kept talking about adult stuff because we were on a date!

Point is, if you and your partner both work remotely, or have some daytime flexibility, maybe try squeeze in a day date. It doesn’t have to get as dirty or spicy as an oil change. I have to say though, it felt cute and fun and really efficient. You could do this kind of thing with a trip to the DMV or grocery shopping. A task that has to happen can do double-duty. Just make sure to have conversations beyond the operational side of life. Have adult conversations. (I know it’s hard). This kind of creative date idea can be especially great for a first date, as it allows you to bond over shared tasks and conversations.

The “Paint and Sip” Like it’s 2015 Date

For a creative date idea that lets you unleash your inner artist, consider a paint and sip class. Minneapolis has several studios where you can enjoy a glass of wine or your favorite drink while painting your own masterpiece. It’s a relaxing and fun way to spend time together.

Research shows you get a dopamine hit from trying something new.

Paint and Sip studios provide all the materials you’ll need—paints, canvases, brushes—and guide you through the process of creating your artwork. Whether you’re painting a scenic landscape, a romantic portrait, or something abstract and fun, it’s a great way to bond and create a memorable keepsake.

Plus, there’s something incredibly satisfying about sipping on a nice drink while you paint. It’s a low-pressure, high-fun date idea that’s perfect for those nights when you want to do something different but still relaxing.

The “Adventure Date Idea”

If you and your partner are craving a bit of excitement, why not try an adventure date? Minneapolis has plenty of options to get your adrenaline pumping. One thrilling idea is axe throwing. Yes, you read that right—axe throwing. There are several venues in the city where you can learn the proper techniques and safety procedures, and then let loose and see who has the best aim. It’s a unique and exhilarating way to spend an evening.

For a more laid-back but equally adventurous date, visit the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. This beautiful park features over 60 sculptures, including the iconic Spoonbridge and Cherry. It’s the perfect spot for a romantic stroll, to take in the art and enjoy each other’s company looking at beautiful things instead of piles of unorganized toys. Plus, it’s a great way to get some fresh air.

Whether you’re throwing axes or admiring sculptures, these adventure date ideas are sure to add a bit of excitement to your night. So step out of your comfort zone and try something new—you might just find a new favorite date activity.

The “Dreamy Picnic” Date

Let’s talk about my dream date that’s been living rent-free in my head: a picnic at the Lyndale Rose Garden. It’s giving Bridgerton, it’s giving romance, it’s giving “we’re fancy people who have our lives together” (even if we were negotiating with a toddler about socks just hours earlier).

The Lyndale Rose Garden is seriously one of the most gorgeous spots in Minneapolis. With over 3,000 plants and 100+ varieties of roses, it’s peak romance when they’re in bloom (usually June through early October). The gazebo, the fountains, the whole vibe—it’s the closest you’ll get to feeling like you’re on a Netflix period drama without wearing a corset.

Now for the food situation! There is indeed a place called Picnic + Social in Linden Hills that specializes in pre-made picnic experiences. They offer these adorable wicker baskets filled with artisanal cheeses, crackers, fruits, and other delicious nibbles. The best part? Zero prep work for you. They even include a blanket!

If you want to level up the romance:

  • Bring a portable speaker for some low-key music
  • Pack a couple of stemless wine glasses (because spills + your Bridgerton outfit = disaster)
  • Grab a bottle of something bubbly like NA champagne from Marigold
  • Consider going on a weekday evening when it’s less crowded

Pro tip: The rose garden is actually part of the larger Lake Harriet area, so after your picnic, you can stroll around the lake or even catch a free concert at the bandshell if your timing is right.

This date costs way less than a fancy dinner out, but honestly? It feels more special. There’s something about being outdoors, surrounded by flowers, that makes conversation flow differently. You remember you’re not just co-parents and co-managers of a household—you’re two people who actually like each other.

Bonus: At-Home Cheap Date Ideas (When You Can’t Escape)

Sometimes, the babysitter cancels. Sometimes, the idea of even finding a babysitter is too much (or too much money). That doesn’t mean date night is dead—it just means you need a solid at-home date night plan. These indoor date ideas ensure you can still have a memorable night without leaving the comfort of your home.

Try:
✔️ A themed movie night (with cocktails, snacks, and a no-phone rule)
✔️ A board game or Jenga session
✔️ A Nintendo Switch night
✔️ Cooking a fancy meal together (or heating up frozen pizza and pretending it’s fancy)
✔️ Suprise each other with Door Dash – one person buys appetizer, the other buys the entree

Step 5: Accept That You’ll Be in Bed by 10:30 and That’s Okay

The biggest mistake you can make on date night is trying to overdo it. You are not the person you were at 23, closing down the bar, eating pizza at 2 a.m., making reckless decisions. You are a person who enjoys comfortable seating and a good cocktail. Lean into it. Whether it’s enjoying live music at a local venue or simply having a quiet night in, the key is to embrace the moment and enjoy each other’s company.

Have the fun. Eat the fancy fries. Laugh at your partner doing virtual reality boxing. Then go home, wash your face, and sleep.

Because honestly? That’s the real prize.
