Updated August 27, 2025

This week reads like a Venn diagram where “wholesome” kisses “I am still a person.” Below: three kid-forward outings, three mom-forward plans, and a few researched notes for your brain and calendar.

Kid-forward (doable, low drama)

Walker Art Center: Free First Saturday (Sept 6)

Free museum day with hands-on art activities and the Sculpture Garden as your bonus playground. Tickets are free, hours are generous, and themes skew creative rather than chaotic. Details. For the specific Sept 6 program, see the day’s listing here.

  • Why it works: Shade, bathrooms, art, and space to wander.

Como Park Zoo: Little Explorers Thursday (Aug 28) + weekend animal talks

A free, drop-in program Thursday 10 a.m.–noon geared toward littles, often with ASL interpretation. The weekend also features short keeper talks and the beloved Sparky show. Program info and daily schedule. Note: fall/winter hours shift to 10 a.m.–4 p.m. starting Sept 2. Hours.

  • Why it works: Free, stroller-friendly, and attention-span friendly.

Minnesota Children’s Museum: Free First Sunday (plan ahead for Sept 7)

Admission is free the first Sunday monthly thanks to Securian. Reservations drop two weeks prior and go fast. If you want in on Sept 7, set a reminder now. Museum page and a helpful overview here.

  • Why it works: High-impact play, low price, indoors if the weather acts up.

Mom-forward (leave the house, feel like yourself)

Minnesota State Fair (through Sept 1)

Yes, the fair is still the fair, but the accessibility info is better every year and there’s free live music tucked into nearly every corner. Dates: Aug 21–Sept 1. General admission runs $20 adults, $18 kids/seniors, under 5 free. Official site and a helpful ticket overview here.

  • Tip: Scan the accessibility and kids guides on the fair site and aim for off-peak hours.

Minnesota Lynx vs. Dallas Wings (Mon, Sept 1, 7 p.m., Target Center)

Moms’ night out with the winningest vibe in town. A Labor Day home game is a perfect dose of community energy. Event listing and a schedule snapshot here.

  • Tip: Downtown has plenty of NA options pregame, or skip straight to your seat and be unabashedly into it.

Open Streets West Broadway (Sat, Sept 6, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.)

Car-free streets, local businesses, music, art, and room to breathe. Great with kids or as a solo decompression walk. See the city update here, West Broadway page here, and Capri Theater event here.

  • Why it works: Free, inclusive, and you decide the pace.

Bonus: Candlelight concerts (Thu, Sept 4 – various programs)

String quartets by candlelight at Granada Theater. Seated, gorgeous, and delightfully phone-light. Options include Vivaldi on Sept 4. Calendar and a ticketed listing here.

Kid + mom crossover picks

Science Museum of Minnesota: Omnitheater

Choose from family-friendly features or snag the limited “Prince: Sign O’ the Times” screenings Aug 28–31 if your heart needs a purple rinse. Omnitheater hub and the Prince listing here.

Mill City Farmers Market (Sat, Sept 6, 8 a.m.–1 p.m.)

Great produce, stroller-friendly paths, and solid people-watching by the Guthrie. Accepts EBT/WIC. Event listing and market info.

Mom notes: Evidence-based and useful

Paid family and medical leave is coming (Jan 1, 2026)

Minnesota’s statewide paid leave program starts next year. Start conversations now with HR and caretaking partners. State overview here, employee guidance here, and a recent explainer from MPR here.

  • What to do now: Ask about employer readiness, payroll deductions, and how your household might use leave in 2026. Nerdy, yes, but future you says thanks.

Back-to-school: MPS first day is Sept 2 (grades 1–12); Pre-K/K start Sept 4

Print this and tape it to the fridge. Official 2025–26 calendar PDF here.

Mental health, same-day help

Hennepin County’s Behavioral Health Center at 1800 Chicago Ave S is open daily 9 a.m.–9 p.m. Walk in for assessment and connection to ongoing care. Details. For acute psychiatric crises, see Hennepin Healthcare’s service info here.
